About Wat Kow Tham Meditation Center

Wat Kow Tham โ€” meaning "mountain cave monastery" in Thai โ€” is the most historic meditation center on Koh Phangan and one of the oldest continuously operating Vipassana retreat centers in Thailand for international practitioners. Founded in 1988 by Thai nun Mae Chee Ahmon, it has served as a gateway to Buddhist meditation for thousands of seekers from around the world.

The center sits on a wooded hill above the village of Baan Tai, offering lovely vistas of the island and the Gulf of Thailand. The modest facilities include a meditation hall, kitchen, several small dormitories, and huts for monks and nuns. It is deliberately simple โ€” this is a place for practice, not luxury.

The 10-day retreats follow a traditional format: insight meditation in all body positions (sitting, walking, standing, lying), development of loving-kindness (metta), reflections, morning stretching exercises, and daily dharma lectures. Noble silence is maintained throughout, creating a powerful container for deep introspection. The retreat is run entirely on a donation basis โ€” there is no fixed fee, honoring the Buddhist tradition of freely offering the teachings.

What makes Wat Kow Tham unique is its authenticity. This is not a commercialized wellness experience โ€” it's a genuine Buddhist meditation retreat led by experienced teachers. For those willing to embrace the simplicity and discipline, it offers one of the most profound meditation experiences available on the island.
